My Brightspring 10 Day Detox: The Halfway Point

Picture 3So there is good news and bad news.

We’ll get the bad news out of the way first: I cheated on my Detox. 

But here’s the good news: It was with a glass of champagne to celebrate my family moving into a new house!

Honestly, I don’t feel guilty. It was truly  a once in a lifetime event, so I’m cool with it (And I think Carrie at Brightspring Health would be cool with it too). Especially since my whole family ate Dibella’s subs, chips, soda, and cookies in front of me right before and I sat dutifully eating my grilled chicken with avocado and sauteed green beans (thank you Wegmans $6 meals!). Considering the fact that I prepared my own chicken/bacon/avocado/ romaine wrap in the car on the way to the closing, I think I earned it.

Today was hard though. On one hand, I am 100% sure that  eating this way and drinking my smoothies kept my blood sugar under control as I packed, loaded, unloaded, ran to the closing, picked up kids, and on and on. I got hungry, but it was more because I didn’t take the time to stop and eat, and it wasn’t that panicky low-blood-sugar hungry.

On the other hand – DiBellas. Cookies. Chips. COFFEE.

Avocado and Bacon

What have I been eating instead. Lots of avocado. Lots of bacon. Lots of butternut squash, romaine, and greens. Frankly, there is a huge variety of things I can eat on my Detox, but with the craziness of moving, I’m not exactly preparing a ton of food. I have a batch of premade bacon, some cut up veggies, and some avocados, and I’m just taking them from house to house with me. I’m hoping by day 7 I can branch out a little more.

But I made it through moving day. Phew. 5 days down, 5 days to go.

My First Green Smoothie

I’m a veteran green juice drinker but I had my first green smoothie yesterday as part of the Brightspring 10 Day Detox.

Does it look yummy to you??

Day 1 down, 9 days to go! The good: I felt physically quite well yesterday. No gastroparesis after lunch like I usually get. Also, the food I ate was all really yummy. The bad: I was a little bit hungry, and ended up going to bed super early to take my mind off it (although that is just as well since I was exhausted today).

Brightspring 10 Day Detox: Day 1

Today I start my Brightspring 10-Day Detox! The past couple of days I’ve been going back and forth between wanting to indulge while I can (carbs! coffee! wine!) or if I should get a jump start on the Detox early. Let’s just say I did a little of the former and a lot of the latter.

I did a big shopping trip yesterday to get all the things I will need to make my Detox-approved meals for the next five days.

Grocery Trip

It looks so good, doesn’t it!! I have to say, though, that I cheated a little (already! is there no hope for me??) with some of the ingredients, like the organic chicken broth. I was supposed to make my own broth and soup with a leftover whole chicken, and while this is something I do regularly, we are in the middle of moving right now, my kitchen is packed, and I needed to simplify. That is also the reason I bought the more expensive broccoli crowns and pre-cut butternut squash. I normally don’t buy pre-cut veggies, but with my kitchen in random boxes throughout the house, I need to make concessions.

The cost for the food I bought specifically for the Detox was $42.00. That includes enough to at least share with my family of 4 and enough chicken for 2 meals for all of us (I’m not kidding myself, my kids will probably be eating chicken fingers or pizza some nights this week because of the move). This does not include the quart of green smoothie that I will be receiving each day as part of the Detox!

My Detox Journey With BrightSpring: The Before

Since before January 1, I have been jonesing to do a juice detox. Other people want to go on vacation, others want a new outfit, but I’m craving an opportunity to completely change the way I look at food for 10 whole days.

Enter Carrie from Brightspring Health. Apparently, she is kind of a big deal here in Rochester, since many of my facebook friends with seemingly nothing in common seem to know her. Carrie is the Smoothie Swami. People RAVE about her green smoothies. As a devotee to the green smoothie myself, I immediately wanted to join Carrie’s 10 day Detox and slurp these delish smoothies myself for 10 days.

Here is what I have in store for the ten days starting Monday, April 8:

  • 1 PINT 1 Quart of green smoothie every single day. Half as a morning snack, half as an afternoon snack.
  • Eating plan free of dairy, grains, and sugar.
  • Personal encouragement every single day (and somewhere around day three I am going to need it!)

Green Smoothie

I know most people who do the 10 day detox end up losing weight.  And hey, I’d be lying if I said I don’t hope to drop a few pounds, but that is really not why I want to do the Brightspring Health 10 day detox. I struggle daily with a combination of gastroparesis and ulcerative colitis. What I put into my mouth for every meal or snack has a huge effect on how I feel for the rest of the day or week even. For the past several months I’ve been feeling like sugar and bread, while easy to digest, are not doing me any favors in the long run, due to their inflammatory effects.

I think the idea of cutting out grains as a permanent measure will never happen for me. I think getting rid of them (and sugar) for a finite period of time is a great idea to get a reboot.

What I’m really hoping to get out of the detox is a lighter, less sluggish feeling, greater energy, and better digestion. I’ll be updating you during and after the detox to let you know how I’m doing.  If you’d like more details about what I’ll be doing, check out Brightspring Health.

Is Couponing a Fad whose time is over? Or, have the “extreme” couponers ruined it for the rest of us?

For the past couple of months, I’ve been noticing a subtle shift on coupon blogs and message boards. I couldn’t point to one specific indication, but I have been getting this feeling that the time of the “crazy couponer” may be fading away from popular culture.

And then today I read this article which lays out a decline in coupon use and blames it on shoppers being savvier. One comment in the article I completely disagree with. Phil Lempert, the “Supermarket Guru,” speaks of coupons as:

“It was like the training wheels … to teach people how to save money,”

Anyone who has done a serious couponing trip, one where you save over 60% on your grocery bill, knows that couponing is not for newbies. It’s hard work, and you need to be hyper-organized.

However, the stats tell us that fewer coupons have been released and redeemed in 2012-2013 than in previous years. I know I personally use fewer coupons than I did in 2008-2010, but it has nothing to do with coupon availability or low value (two reasons cited in the article). I’ve simply been doing less typical grocery store shopping.

What do I do instead?

::I get my meat from a local farmer and buy in bulk to get the very best price.

::I belong to a CSA and get my fresh produce and herbs directly from Wickham Farms 20 weeks of the year.

::I use my coupons strategically. For example, I know Trader Joe’s has the best prices on Applegate lunch meat. So I print my Applegate coupons and use them at TJs to get the best price on nitrate-free lunch meat. I also know where to get coupons for the products I use most. Mambo Sprouts has a great selection of organic coupons. Organic brands come up frequently on Coupons.com, like Yes to products, Muir Glen, and Cascadian Farms.

::I make stuff. Some of my best stockpile items like chicken stock, face soap, and cereal, are all things that I have been making myself. It’s just not as fun to stock up on these things whenthe stuff you can stockpile for free is full of chemicals and you can easily make your own healthy versions for very little money.

 

The day when I don’t shop at Wegmans on a regular basis is not going to come. That’s pretty much a guarantee. But I am using coupons at Wegmans as only 1 way to save money on groceries and household items, not the sole strategy. Potty Training: My Top Four Tips and Tricks

Potty TrainingHave you seen that commercial? The one where a little boy, after struggling to accomplish his goal of going pee-pee in the potty, runs outside to a parade complete with clowns, a band, and adult men dressed as toilets.

I hate that commercial.  Mostly because the other day my daughter finally went #2 on the potty, and then ran to the window and asked, “Where’s my parade?”

I gave her a chocolate chip, which thankfully she was happy with.

Potty Training is not easy.  Judging from the sheer number of items that come up in an Amazon search for “potty training” (5,299), it’ a pretty hot topic with the preschool set. Everyone has war stories, ranging from most inappropriate place to have an accident (in church), to stories of the sheer obstinacy of toddlers who sit on the potty for 20 minutes, then pee on the floor next to the toilet.

I am by no means an expert on potty training. Heck, my youngest (3) still wears her “special underwear” (ie. training pants) at night.  But here are a few tips that worked for me – and none of them involve the “iPotty” – a device that encourages children to bring an iPad to the bathroom with them.:

1.  Don’t be afraid to do the “no-pants-dance.”  When were were on Day 1 of potty training both our kids, we let them run around the house pantsless, and that way they (and we!) knew exactly when something was about to happen (or more often, already in progress).

2. Bite the bullet and set aside a few days to really work on potty training. I know this strategy doesn’t work for all families, but it really worked for us.  With both kids, we chose a long weekend when both my husband and I would be home, and stayed at home for all three days. We went cold turkey on the diapers and had the kids wear new, cute underwear for all three days. By honing in our focus and not getting distracted by outings, both kids were really able to focus on the task at hand.

3.  Let the child choose his or her own underwear. Having ownership and responsibility in the situation goes a long way toward helping children feel in control of the process.

4. Don’t throw out those wet wipes. Just because you’re not changing diapers anymore doesn’t mean you won’t need baby wipes next to the toilet and in the car. I really like the Seventh Generation Baby Free & Clear Wipes, especially for when we’re on the go.
