Rich Food, Poor Food: A Flash Giveaway!

Picture 6I was recently sent Rich Food Poor Food: The Ultimate Grocery Purchasing System (GPS) by Jayson and Mira Calton by my friends at Stonyfield Yogurt and it has quickly become one of my go-to references for healthy eating.

Anyone who cares about what they put into their body should have a copy of this book. I consider myself a health-conscious, label-reading, and informed consumer when it comes to food, but Rich Food, Poor Food really opened my eyes to several foods that I thought were healthful that really just aren’t.

For example, I don’t buy anything that has MSG (monosodium glutamate) in it. First, it causes an over-secretion of insulin (which can lead to blood sugar fluctations and diabetes), but for me personally it jacks up my stomach. Every.single.time. I thought I knew what to look for on labels: MSG, autolyzed yeast extract, and glutamate all indicate the presence of MSG. But I didn’t know that the ubiquitous “natural flavors” that is on SO many labels, can also mask the presence of MSG. Grrr.

Since I’ll be doing Brightspring’s 10-day Detox in April, I was really excited to get some specific information about what foods will fit with my detox plan. What’s great is that Rich Food, Poor Food gives lists with specific name brand products that fit their “Rich Food” criteria.

For example, when it comes to alternative milks, I learned that while the Almond Breeze Vanilla Flavored Almond Milk has GMO soy, carageenan (possible MSG source), and evaporated cane juice (added sugar), the Almond Breeze Unsweetened Original Almond Milk is safe of harmful additives.

Rich Food Poor Food: The Ultimate Grocery Purchasing System (GPS) is a book that I read cover to cover, and I’d love to share it! I’m giving away a copy of Rich Food Poor Food: The Ultimate Grocery Purchasing System (GPS) to one lucky Mindfully Frugal Mom reader! Plus, whoever wins will also get coupons for 3 FREE Stonyfield Greek Yogurt cups. Stonyfield Greek Yogurt is one of the 3 Greek yogurts recommended in the book.

Potty Training: My Top Four Tips and Tricks

Potty TrainingHave you seen that commercial? The one where a little boy, after struggling to accomplish his goal of going pee-pee in the potty, runs outside to a parade complete with clowns, a band, and adult men dressed as toilets.

I hate that commercial.  Mostly because the other day my daughter finally went #2 on the potty, and then ran to the window and asked, “Where’s my parade?”

I gave her a chocolate chip, which thankfully she was happy with.

Potty Training is not easy.  Judging from the sheer number of items that come up in an Amazon search for “potty training” (5,299), it’ a pretty hot topic with the preschool set. Everyone has war stories, ranging from most inappropriate place to have an accident (in church), to stories of the sheer obstinacy of toddlers who sit on the potty for 20 minutes, then pee on the floor next to the toilet.

I am by no means an expert on potty training. Heck, my youngest (3) still wears her “special underwear” (ie. training pants) at night.  But here are a few tips that worked for me – and none of them involve the “iPotty” – a device that encourages children to bring an iPad to the bathroom with them.:

1.  Don’t be afraid to do the “no-pants-dance.”  When were were on Day 1 of potty training both our kids, we let them run around the house pantsless, and that way they (and we!) knew exactly when something was about to happen (or more often, already in progress).

2. Bite the bullet and set aside a few days to really work on potty training. I know this strategy doesn’t work for all families, but it really worked for us.  With both kids, we chose a long weekend when both my husband and I would be home, and stayed at home for all three days. We went cold turkey on the diapers and had the kids wear new, cute underwear for all three days. By honing in our focus and not getting distracted by outings, both kids were really able to focus on the task at hand.

3.  Let the child choose his or her own underwear. Having ownership and responsibility in the situation goes a long way toward helping children feel in control of the process.

4. Don’t throw out those wet wipes. Just because you’re not changing diapers anymore doesn’t mean you won’t need baby wipes next to the toilet and in the car. I really like the Seventh Generation Baby Free & Clear Wipes, especially for when we’re on the go. They’re made from renewable resources and free of fragrances, parabens, and pthalates.  They make clean up MUCH easier and the Seventh Generation wipes are super-soft on little tushes. Trust me — kids will be more likely to wipe with something soft and comfortable than with rough toilet paper.

On the Moo-ve at the Rochester Museum and Science Center

Stonyfield Giveaway

Since we’re in the process of selling our house, and buying a new one, there have been many days recently when we need to be out of the house – whether or not it’s convenient for me and our two kids.

Last Friday, otherwise known as the day Nemo struck, we had to leave our house for three hours in the morning. Since the weather was scary-bad, I didn’t want to drive too far and risk getting stuck, so I took my kids to the Rochester Museum and Science Center for the morning. I figured the mastodon bones and energy exhibit would occupy us all for the allotted time.

Picture 10

And it was a great morning! We dug for fossils, made our own energy power, and examined the life-size mastodon.

Thank goodness I brought the new Stonyfield Organic Smoothies. Mason and Emma really needed an energy boost towards the end of the trip — their energy was flagging, but due to our house inspection, we couldn’t go home!   The kid-size combination of lean protein and organic fruit and vegetable purees really gave them the oomph they needed to power through.

Picture 11

Maybe a little too much oomph. . .

Picture 9

Whoops! A spill!

Ok, I totally got a dirty look from the lady running the cafe. I’m sure because we brought our own snacks and weren’t “paying customers” (never mind the $35 I’d shelled out for admission). And maybe, if we weren’t the only people in thejoint, I would have felt guilty. But I didn’t. I was really glad we had this healthier alternative to snack on instead of sugary snacks from the vending machine.

If you’re within driving distance to Rochester, I highly recommend a trip to the RMSC.  My 3 year old was a little young for it, but I think kids ages 4-5 and up would just LOVE it. There really is something for all ages there.  Obviously, the fossil dig was a huge draw for my kids, but the new exhibit on Race is really fascinating.

Would you like to win coupons for 4 FREE 6-packs of Stonyfield Organic Smoothies plus 1 deck of 52 Fun things to do in the Car cards? Enter on the form below:
