DIY Beauty: Super-Moisturizing Lip Treatment

It’s the time of year when, no matter WHAT I do, my lips are constantly chapped. At the height of the winter dryness, sometimes it is all I can do to keep them from constantly cracking and bleeding. I have radiator heat at my place, and it is brutal on the skin and lips.

DIY beauty remedies are fun and easy to make. I’ve been using this particular lip treatment recipe for a few years and even though it’s more work than slathering on layer after layer of store-bought lip balm, it works better and lasts longer.

In fact, you only need four ingredients, and if you go into your kitchen right now, you will likely find that you have them all in your cupboards already!

So, I was trying to take a picture of my before and after lips for this post. Have you every tried taking a picture of your own lips? It is. . . challenging. And the results just ended up looking obscene.

You’ll just have to take my word that this lip treatment is, well, the bomb!

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the following ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp honey (local, raw, is best, for SO many reasons!)
  • The juice of 1/4 orange (or substitute the lemon)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (this is by FAR my favorite brand)

Mix the ingredients really well, so they are totally combined. Decant into a smaller 5-6 oz glass jar. You could use an old jam jar, but I really love the small size pyrex (like the small ones in this set.)

Now you have the mixture ready to store, but to use it, this is what you do:

  1. Slather a generous amount (at least a teaspoon) on your lips. It will be partly gross, because oily stuff on your lips, and partially delicious, because sugar and honey.
  2. TRYING AS HARD AS YOU CAN MUSTER NOT TO LICK YOUR LIPS, keep the mask on for 5-10 minutes at least. It’s harder than you think (trust me!)
  3. Very gently, use a soft washcloth dipped in warm water to dab the mask off your lips. They should be soft and moisturized, and yes, kissable!
