How to Choose a Safe Sunscreen + Goddess Garden Organics Review & Giveaway

Safe Sunscreen

What is in your sunscreen? Do you know?

Until I had kids, I didn’t think about it too much. But when I realized I was using a product that could be absorbed into my small children’s systems, I became concerned.  When my son was born 7 years ago, I made the switch to organic or “natural” sunscreens, but still didn’t look into it much further. I’ve now learned that ANY chemical sunscreen is problematic, especially for children.

How to choose a safe sunscreen:

Look for a brand that does not contain chemicals (like pthalates and hormone-disrupting parabens). Most chemical sunscreens contain the toxic chemical Oxybenzone, and endocrine disrupter which can be absorbed into the bloodstream. It is especially dangerous for children’s growing bodies!

Choose a sunscreen that is biodegradable so it is as safe for wildlife and reefs as it is for your skin!

Choose a sunscreen that provides immediate sun protection. Minerals are the way to go! They actually sit on top of the skin, so they are effective immediately. Chemical sunscreens need 15-20 minutes to be fully absorbed into the skin before they are truly effective. I’ll be honest, once I get sunscreen on my kids, they’re out the door! We never wait around for 20 minutes. I prefer a mineral-based formula that can give my kids protection from the sun as soon as I spray it on!

Find a Non-Nano option. Some sunscreens contain nano-particles, which means they contain mineral pieces so small they can be absorbed into the skin. You can learn more about why non-nano is the way to go at

UVA and UVB protection – it is crucial that sunscreen protects against both kinds of harmful rays, both the ones that cause sunburn, and the ones that cause cancer.

Vegan formulas. It is important to me to use a product that doesn’t contain any animal products or doesn’t use animal testing.

Which Safe Sunscreen Does all That?

Goddess Garden Sunscreen fulfills all of these criteria! I was over the moon to be able to try some with my family. When the box of Goddess Garden products came, I immediately was drawn to the spray formulas. If you have kids, you already know why. Most kids I know, mine included, HATE applying sunscreen. Using a spray bottle makes it SO much easier to provide the sun protection they need.

Since I received the box of Goddess Garden products, I have the small sport bottle in my purse, and the Everyday Sunscreen Spray Bottle in my car. This way, I’ll have one with me wherever I am.

True Mom Confessions: While I don’t let my kids outside without slathering them in sunscreen, I rarely use it myself. However, since I HAD to use the Goddess Garden sunscreen, I tried it. Plus, I know I should be wearing sunscreen on my face daily. What I liked is that the Goddess Garden sunscreen was just as easy to apply under makeup as it was after I had already applied my makeup for the day. I rarely remember to apply sunscreen before makeup, but if I can do it when I get in the car on my way to work, it makes my life SO much easier! Plus, chemical formulas that soak into your skin often contain skin-irritating ingredients. Goddess Garden has skin-nourishing ingredients. I’ve always broken out after wearing sunscreen on my face. Goddess Garden’s formulas contain aloe vera, coconut oil, lavender, and other skin-friendly, non-pore-clogging ingredients.

I would like to try this! We use alba now, but a spray would be so much easier

    • I love the spray – and it’s non-aerosol which is great. So easy to get on my active kids.

  2. Hey Sarah love your blog. It’s terrible what’s in sunscreen these days.. Sounds like this is a good one :)

    • It really is! Thanks for stopping by, and make sure you get your free tube! (Above)

  3. Just snagged a free sample. I make my own right now, but I’d love to have a brand I can trust for when I’m being lazy!

  4. I love their 1 oz tube. It’s perfect for my purse and to keep in the car just in case the sun comes out later in the day and I forgot to put it on before leaving the house. And it’s TSA approved size!

  5. I really, really love spray sunscreen for ease of use. I would love to try this sunscreen out! I’ve been using much more natural products on my own skin, so the idea of using chemical-laden sunscreen on myself this summer kind of makes me want to cringe!

  6. I have never heard of this brand, I have to look for it. I love that their sunscreen is effective immediately! I always check to make sure the products are chemical free. I also look for UVA and UVB protection. I also look for waterproof sunscreen since we are at the pool all summer!
