Tuna Salad Recipe: Avocado Bites | Today’s Healthy Lunch with #OceanNaturals #Shop #CBias

Cbias disclosure

We talk a LOT about coming up with healthy dinner ideas. In fact, I try to post a healthy dinner recipe nearly every week. But I often forget about a healthy lunch, and when lunchtime comes around I end up eating the kids’ leftovers.  As part of my concerted effort to come up with easy-to-make but healthy lunch recipes, I’ve been looking into healthy lunch options.  Ocean Naturals offers delicious, yet healthy and sustainably caught canned tuna. When I learned about it I knew I was going to have to make a healthy tuna salad recipe.

Ocean Naturals’ Mission Statement pretty much sums up everything that is important to me about food. It is:

Good. Good For You. Good for the Planet

Those are basically my 3 top criteria for food! It needs to taste good — it needs to be healthy — it needs to “do no harm” in its production. Ocean Naturals Premium Tuna checks off all those requirements.

The fact that Ocean Naturals is so mindful in its sustainability practices really gives me the confidence to serve canned tuna to my family.

Here are some of the ways that Ocean Naturals keeps an eye on sustainability in their harvesting practices:

  • From target species populations that are healthy and abundant and are currently being harvested at a level that promotes the stocks’ longevity
  • Using catch-methods that limit ecosystem impacts
  • In regions where the fishery is managed by regulatory bodies that help sustain the long-term productivity of all impacted species

I’m always concerned with WHERE my food is coming from. I love that Ocean Naturals is completely transparent about this! After I bought my Ocean Naturals tuna, I went to Ocean Naturals’ website and entered the code on my can. I learned that my Skipjack tuna was caught off the coast of New Zealand by a captain who uses free-catch practices.

When I hear “tuna salad,”  I think gloppy mayonnaise and soggy bread. This recipe has neither! In fact, it is both gluten-free and paleo, using fresh, but filling ingredients. It feels a little like I’m eating sushi! The creamy avocado plus the crunch of the cucumber and sprouts make this a truly satisfying lunch experience.  I find my energy level throughout the afternoon is much higher if I eat more protein and less carbs for lunch. This easy lunch can be taken on the go for busy days too!

Tuna Salad Recipe: Avocado Bites (serves 2)

  • 1 Can Ocean Naturals Skipjack Tuna
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup bean sprouts
  • 1/2 avocado, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced thick, skin on
  • juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tsp fresh dill
  • salt and pepper to taste

1. Prepare the tuna salad by breaking up the Ocean Naturals Tuna with a fork.

2. In a small bowl, combine the tuna, oil, lemon juice, dill, salt and pepper. Mix well.

3. Layer the ingredients on your thick cucumber slices. I like to do cucumber, tuna salad, avocado, then top with bean sprouts.
