Make It Yourself: Carpet Deodorizer

Being a mom of a dog and two messy kids, one of which has an obnoxiously easy to trigger gag reflex, I often have cause to do some major carpet cleaning.

While I find it fairly easy to find products that clean my area rugs (Biokleen Carpet and Rug Shampoo is a good choice), it’s much harder to get rid of the odors that linger for days or even weeks after the stain is gone.

Thankfully, I’ve found a foolproof method for getting rid of all sorts of odors, and it’s SO simple to make. I just combine:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 10-20 drops essential oils like peppermint or orange (something with a strong but pleasant odor)

Then I mix them up in a bowl, sprinkle it on the offending odor, wait an hour — or four — and vacuum it up!

If you have a really stubborn smell, you could also use the above concoction, mix in a little water to make a paste, and rub on the area. If you do this, it will take more than a once-over with the vacuum to get it out, but it will come off.

Why didn’t I think of that? I have done the baking soda thing, but adding the esential oils? Awesome idea! Thanks!
