Make It Yourself: Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution

Being a mom of a dog and two messy kids, one of which has an obnoxiously easy to trigger gag reflex, I often have cause to do some major carpet cleaning.

While I find it fairly easy to find products that clean my area rugs (Biokleen Carpet and Rug Shampoo is a good choice), it’s much harder to get rid of the odors that linger for days or even weeks after the stain is gone. I haven’t found a commercial product that works anywhere near as well as my homemade carpet cleaning solution!

Here is my  foolproof method for getting rid of all sorts of odors, and it’s SO simple to make.

Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 10-20 drops essential oils like peppermint or orange (something with a strong but pleasant odor)

Mix them up in a bowl, sprinkle it on the offending odor, wait an hour — or four — and vacuum it up!

If you have a really stubborn smell, you could also use the above concoction, mix in a little water to make a paste, and rub on the area. If you do this, it will take more than a once-over with the vacuum to get it out, but it will come off.

There are a few other tricks up my sleeve for natural and frugal ways to make my home smell heavenly. I haven’t been stumped by a scent yet!

  1. Why didn’t I think of that? I have done the baking soda thing, but adding the esential oils? Awesome idea! Thanks!

  2. This design is spectacular! You obviously know
how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost
moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Great job.
I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it.
    Too cool!

  3. Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with the pictures
on this blog loading? I’m trying to figure out if its a
problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  4. Wow this is awesome! Thanks for sharing your tips. I will definitely use them next time I have to clean my carpet. Great post I’m sure everyone will find it helpful.

  5. I really needed a hand on that matter and you helped me a lot. Thank you so much! <3

  6. A good scrub with a mixture of washing soda, baking soda, and water. Mix a spray bottle full of warm water with a tablespoon each of washing soda and baking soda. Spray liberally or add the mixture directly to the washing machine. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. If possible completely air dry. if left in the sun the fresh air will help release any lingering odor.

  7. Thanks for these great cleaning tips. I will share this post with all my friends :)
