Make It Yourself: Drain Cleaner!

Non Toxic Drain CleanerSince my daughter was diagnosed with asthma a year ago, my husband and I have been very vigilant about what we bring into our house. When it comes to household cleaners, nearly everything we use is something I make.

We do have an old house, though, and a recurring issue we have is the bathroom sink getting clogged. After a little research, trial, and error, I realized that  the easiest and most effective way to un-clog it is with natural ingredients!

All you need is those trusty standbys, baking soda and vinegar.

Here’s what you do:

  • Pour about 1/2 cup baking soda down the affected drain.
  • Chase it with about 1 cup of white vinegar. It should start to bubble. This would be a great time to bring the kids in to see the “science experiment!”
  • Rinse it all through with several cups of boiling water. I usually pour about 1 cup at a time.
  • Repeat as necessary.

We used to have to buy the traditional drain-clogging chemicals to break through our bathroom drain, but since I’ve been using baking soda and vinegar, we haven’t bought any of that stuff, and the drain clogs less frequently!

  1. Worked great! I had to pour at least 4 cups of hot water before it started to really work. I think I ended up pouring a whole tea kettle full just to get rid of the water. With each cup it drained faster. Thanks for sharing!
