I know it may seem hard to believe, but for about the first 25 years of my life my sole exposure to Sloppy Joes was with the brown Manwich can. Sloppy Joes are such an easy, kid-friendly weeknight meal, but, as with many convenience foods, the “original” version has a lot of added ingredients.
And all of a sudden, it occurred to me, why couldn’t I make my own?
So I did, and it was easy-peasy!
Homemade Sloppy Joe Sauce
(Serves 4)
1 8-oz can tomato sauce
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup barbecue sauce ( I like Annie’s Organic Smoky Maple Barbecue sauce, or you could just make your own)
1 onion, very finely diced
1 green pepper, very finely diced
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1. Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl.
2. To assemble the sloppy joes, incorporate sauce into browned ground beef or turkey. Warm through.
3. Serve on crusty rolls. I use this recipe for homemade hamburger rolls.
You can make up a big batch of this Sloppy Joe Sauce ahead of time, and put it in large jam jars to freeze. Then, when you need some, you can just take it out of the freezer and heat it up with your meat!
